Vysotskii Culture

an archaeological culture of the late Bronze Age and early Iron Age (tenth to sixth centuries B.C.). The name derives from a burial ground uncovered at the village of Vysotskii in the Brodov Raion of L’vov Oblast in the Ukrainian SSR. The culture is distributed throughout a small area in L’vov and Ternopol’ oblasts. Burial grounds, settlements, and treasures have been found. The population of the Vysotskii Culture lived in unfortified settlements and engaged in farming and cattle raising. Bodies are typically found buried in ceremonial positions (sometimes cremated) in moundless burial grounds. Burial inventory included primarily ornaments and miniature vessels and less frequently iron knives and flint or bronze arrowheads. Earthenware consisted of tulip-shaped vessels, biconical beakers, basins, and scoops. The Vysotskii culture evolved locally under the influence of the Luzhitse culture.
