the Marshal of the Soviet Union B. M. Shaposhnikov Higher Officers’ School, a military educational institution in the Soviet armed forces. The predecessor of Vystrel was the Officers’ Infantry School (1882). On Nov. 21, 1918, the Higher Infantry School for Command Personnel of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army was formed by order of the Revolutionary Military Council of the Republic. It was subsequently renamed the Higher Tactical Infantry School for Command Personnel of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army in June 1921. (On Oct. 13, 1921, the name of the Third Communist International was added to it.) On Oct. 9, 1924, it was renamed Comintern Vystrel Infantry Tactical School for Advanced Study by Command Personnel of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army; and on Dec. 11, 1963, Marshal of the Soviet Union B. M. Shaposhnikov Vystrel Higher Officers’ School. The school retrains regiment and battalion level command and political personnel of the ground forces in tactics, musketry, and methods of tactical and fire training. The period of study is up to one year. Graduates of the school include Marshals of the Soviet Union A. M. Vasilevskii and N. I. Krylov, Chief Marshals of Aviation K. A. Vershinin and A. E. Golovanov, Marshal of Armored Troops M. E. Katukov, Generals of the Army P. I. Batov, K. N. Galitskii, la. T. Kreizer, M. M. Popov, M. A. Purkaev, I. I. Fediuninskii, and many others. About 200 Vystrel graduates have been awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, and five of them were awarded this title twice. On June 14, 1939, the Vystrel School was awarded the Order of the Red Banner, and on Mar. 18, 1944, it was given the Order of Lenin.
