TAF1

TAF1

A gene on chromosome Xq13.1 that encodes TAF1 RNA polymerase II, the activation of which requires the co-ordinated activity of over 70 poypeptides. TAFs (TATA-binding protein-associated factors) are thought to participate in basal transcription, serve as coactivators, function in promoter recognition or modify general transcription factors to facilitate polypeptide complex assembly and transcription initiation. TAF1 phosphorylates TP53, leading to its MDM2-mediated degradation; phosphorylates GTF2A1 and GTF2F1 on Ser residues; binds DNA; and is essential for progression of the G1 phase of the cell cycle.
