Um Nyobé, Ruben
Born 1913; died Sept. 13, 1958. Figure in the African national liberation movement.
Um Nyobé served in the French colonial administration in Cameroon in his youth. Active in the trade union movement, he was the founder and general secretary of the revolutionary democratic party known as the Union of the Populations of Cameroon. He became vice-president of the African Democratic Assembly in 1948. In 1955 he became a leader of the peoples of Cameroon in their armed struggle against the colonialists. He died in battle against French troops. Um Nyobé is the author of a number of works dealing with the national liberation movement.
