Upper Volga Reservoir

 

a reservoir on the Volga River in the territory of Kalinin Oblast, RSFSR. Area, 183 sq km; volume, 0.52 cu km; length, 85 km; greatest width, 6 km.

One of the first large reservoirs, the Upper Volga Reservoir was built in Russia in the 19th century for transportation. A dam (the Upper Volga Dam) was built in 1843 and reconstructed in 1943. The level of the reservoir fluctuates around 3.5 m and effects a seasonal regulation of flow. Lakes Sterzh, Vselug, Peno, and Volgo are located in the area of the headwaters. There is fishing (pike perch, bronze bream, and pike) in the Upper Volga Reservoir.
