Varena

 

a city, the administrative center of Varena Raion, Lithuanian SSR, located on the Merkis River (a tributary of the Nemunas), with a railroad station on the Vilnius-Grodno line. Population, 4,000 (1969). Varena has woodworking, a cannery (producing canned vegetables and mushrooms), and a plant for reinforced-concrete construction parts. In 1971 a mixed fodder plant was under construction. Varena appeared in the 17th century.
