Cardiology An absence of selenium in the diet, with ↑ binding of hepatic nucleoproteins to DNA regulatory sequences, and activation of transcription in response to oxidative stress; SD has been implicated in colon polyp formation, endemic cardomyopathy, Keshan disease–attributed to a defect in glutathione peroxidase activity, without which there is ↑ platelet aggregation due to impaired free radical salvage or in the catalytic function of type I deiodinizing thyroxine-activating enzyme.
