An organophosphate that is an irreversible inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase. Metrifonate had some currency for treating Schistosoma haematobium schistosomiasis, but proved less effective than praziquantel and is thus no longer used for this indication. It was being developed for Alzheimer's dementia, but was withdrawn due to adverse effects (respiratory paralysis and defects in neuromuscular transmission).
