throttling rod throttling rod[′thräd·əl·iŋ ‚räd] (ordnance) A tapered rod attached to a recoil cylinder of a gun; the piston rod is hollow to receive the throttling rod during recoil, and oil is forced through the orifice around the throttling rod; as recoil proceeds, the larger section of the throttling rod comes into the throttling orifice until, at the end of recoil, the throttling rod nearly seals the throttling orifice, thus bringing the recoiling tube to rest. |
