Vieira White Gilberto
Born Apr. 5, 1911, in Medellin. Active in the Communist Party of Colombia (CPC). Born into the family of an engineer. Journalist by profession.
In 1930, Vieira White took part in the establishment of the CPC. From 1937 to 1947 he was a deputy to parliament for the CPC and a municipal councillor in Bogotá. From 1939 to 1947 he was chairman of the CPC. He was general secretary of the CPC from 1947 to 1958, political secretary of the Central Committee of the CPC from December 1958 to January 1966, and general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party beginning in January 1966. He has been arrested repeatedly for his revolutionary activity and has been incarcerated. He is the author of numerous articles dealing with problems of the revolutionary national-liberation movement from a Marxist standpoint.
