Veselin Djuranovic

Born May 17, 1925, in Martinići, Montenegro. Yugoslav state and party figure. Montenegrin by nationality. Member of the League of Communists of Yugoslavia (LCY) since 1944.

Djuranović took part in the National Liberation War in Yugoslavia of 1941–45, during which he was a member of a regional committee of the Union of Communist Youth of Yugoslavia (UCYY) and a district committee of the United Alliance of Antifascist Youth of Yugoslavia. After the war he graduated from the party school under the Central Committee of the League of Communists of Montenegro (LCM); in this period he was elected secretary of regional committees of the LCY in Danilovgrad and Titograd, a member of a provincial committee of the UCYY, and chairman of the Central Committee of the National Youth of Montenegro.

From 1953 to 1958, Djuranović was director of Radio Titograd and editor in chief of the republic-wide newspaper Pobjeda. He was chairman of the commission of the Central Committee of the LCM on ideological questions and chairman of the Main Committee of the Socialist Alliance of the Working People of Montenegro. From 1963 to 1966 he was chairman of the Executive Council of the Socialist Republic of Montenegro.

At the Eighth Congress of the LCY in 1964, Djuranović was elected a member of the party’s Central Committee. He served as secretary of the Executive Committee of the Central Committee of the LCM from 1966 to 1968 and as chairman of the Central Committee of the LCM from 1968 to 1977. He was a member of the Presidium of the LCY from 1969 to 1974, when he became a member of the Presidium of the Central Committee of the LCY. In March 1977 he was named Chairman of the Federal Executive Council of Yugoslavia. Djuranović was first elected a deputy to the Skupstina (Assembly) of Yugoslavia in 1963.
