Veselinović, Ianko

Born May 1, 1862, in the village of Salaś in Serbia; died there July 14, 1905. Serbian writer. Son of a priest.

In Veselinović’s collections of stories Pictures of Village Life (books 1-2, 1886-88), Wild Flowers (1890-91), and others, the sentimental romantic portrayal of peasant life is combined with realistic pictures of daily existence, customs, and motifs of folk art. Veselinović showed the tragedy of the village intelligentsia (The White Crow, 1890). The novel Gaiduk Stanko (1896) is dedicated to the first uprising of the Serbs against Turkish oppression.
