Paris, Treaty of (1898)

the treaty concluding the Spanish-American War (1898). Signed December 10, the Treaty of Paris (1898) was drawn up at negotiations that had opened in Paris on Oct. 1, 1898. Spain gave up all its rights and claims to Cuba, which was proclaimed an independent state but which became in fact a protectorate of the USA. The USA received Puerto Rico and other Spanish island possessions in the Antilles, as well as the island of Guam. Spain ceded the Philippines to the USA for $20 million. However, the Philippines did not come under the control of American troops until 1901, after the suppression of the liberation movement.
