Turtas

 

a river in Tiumen’ Oblast, RSFSR; a right tributary of the Irtysh River in the Ob’ River basin. The Turtas is 241 km long and drains an area of 12,100 sq km. It is formed by the confluence of the Bol’shoi Turtas and Malyi Turtas rivers. The river is fed primarily by snow. The mean flow rate 74 km from the mouth is 40.2 cu m per sec. The Turtas freezes between mid-October and mid-November, and the ice breaks up between mid-April and mid-May. The river is used for timber flotation. It is navigable in its lower course.
