Turukhan

 

a river in Krasnoiarsk Krai, RSFSR; a left tributary of the Enisei River. The Turukhan measures 639 km in length and drains an area of 35,800 sq km. It originates on and flows over the northeastern edge of the Western Siberian Plain, emptying into the Bol’shoi Shar. It is fed by snow and rain. The mean flow rate is 371 cu m per sec. The Turukhan freezes in October, and the ice breaks up in late May or the first half of June. The main tributaries are the Usomchik, Bol’shaia Bludnaia, Verkhniaia Baikha, and Nizhniaia Baikha, on the right, and the Makovskaia, on the left. The river is used to float timber. It is navigable for a distance of 270 km from the mouth.
