Romanovskii, Gennadii Danilovich

 

Born July 18 (30), 1830, in St. Petersburg; died there Apr. 22 (May 5), 1906. Russian geologist and mining engineer.

Romanovskii graduated from the Institute of the Corps of Mining Engineers in St. Petersburg in 1851 and was a professor at the institute from 1871 to 1875 and from 1879 to 1896. His main works dealt with the paleontology, stratigraphy, tectonics, and mineral resources (coal deposits and oil pools) of the European part of Russia, the Urals, and Middle Asia. Romanovskii proposed a number of improvements in drilling technique and directed deep drilling for subterranean waters near St. Petersburg and in the Crimea.
