Rome Protocols of 1934

agreements signed in Rome on Mar. 17, 1934, by the heads of state of Fascist Italy (B. Mussolini), Austria (E. Dollfuss), and Hungary (G. Gömbös). The protocols provided for closer political and economic ties between participating countries and reflected Fascist Italy’s attempt to draw Austria and Hungary into the orbit of Italian foreign policy. The protocols lost their importance following the conclusion of a treaty between Austria and Germany in July 1936, which virtually obliged Austria to subordinate its policies to the interests of German fascism, and the signing of the Rome-Berlin Axis in October 1936.
