Power Generator Train
(in Russian, energopoezd), a mobile electric power plant whose equipment is mounted on flatcars or railroad freight cars of another type. Such trains are classified according to the type of power generator installed as diesel, gas-turbine, and steam-turbine power generator trains. The installed power is usually less than 10 megawatts (MW). The USSR produces and operates 5-MW power generator trains. The power units are usually used only to generate electricity, but some trains are designed to supply both electric power and heat.
A power generator train is usually composed of flatcars or other freight cars carrying the main power-generating and auxiliary equipment, tank cars with fuel, and a passenger car for service personnel (a team of from eight to 20 people). The number of cars, equipment complement, and physical layout depend on the type and capacity of the power-generating units.
