range rod[′rānj ‚räd] (engineering) A long (6-8 feet or 1.8-2.4 meters) rod fitted with a sharp-pointed metal shoe and usually painted in 1-foot (30-centimeter) bands of alternate red and white; used for sighting points and lines in surveying or for showing the position of a ground point.
