Anodonta

a genus of freshwater bivalve mollusks of the family Unionidae.

The shells of Anodonta (up to 25 cm) consist of two oval valves connected on the dorsal side by an elastic ligament. There are no hinge teeth. There are about 50 widely distributed species of Anodonta. They live in stagnant or slowly flowing waters and feed on bacteria, algae, and decaying organic matter suspended in the water. The larvae (glochidia) are parasites on the skin offish. Anodonta are used as food. The shells of many species of Anodonta serve as raw material for the button industry.
