Root, Gladys Towles

(1905–82) lawyer; born in Los Angeles, Calif. Known for her attire—furs, feathers, oversized jewelry, towering hats with flashing lights—she practiced law in California (1929–82). Her sex and murder cases were often dramatic; her clients were often poor. (Her biography is titled Defender of the Damned (1964).)
