In central IA, east of Iowa City; established Feb 17, 1843 (prior to statehood) from Keokuk, Iowa, Johnson, and Mahaska counties. Name Origin: For a Sac and Fox chief, properly Pawishika 'he who shakes (something off himself).' He was chief during the Black Hawk War (1832); on behalf of his tribe he signed the Treaty of Fort Armstrong at Rock Island, IL.
