a city in the south of the Yemen Arab Republic. Population, 80,000 (1970). Taizz is a trade and transportation center. Highways link it with Sana, the capital of the country, with the seaports of al-Hudayda and Mocha, and with the port of Aden in the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen. The city has an airport. There are plants producing metal dishware and nonalcoholic beverages, as well as a confectionery factory.

Taizz was one of Yemen’s flourishing cities in the Middle Ages but declined in the 19th century. Architectural landmarks include the city’s main mosque, al-Muzaffar (13th–14th centuries), the al-Sharifiya Mosque (13th century), and three-and four-story turret-shaped houses of the medieval type. A new city, with many European-style buildings, is under construction outside the walls of old Taizz.
