the contact surface between a mineral vein and the surrounding rocks. In veins with a nonuniform filling of a distinct mineral substance (of a so-called girdle, symmetrical, or asymmetrical fabric), the part near the selvage is composed of a mineral aggregate that is different from that of the central part. In veins having a uniform composition, both the central part and the part near the selvage consist of the same minerals.
