Vlodavets, Vladimir Ivanovich

 

Born July 15 (27), 1893, in the village of Rozvadovka, Sedlets Province, which is now in Poland. Soviet petrologjst and volcanologist. Doctor of geological-mineralogical sciences (1947), professor (1953), and Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1964).

Vlodavets graduated from the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute. In 1922 he began conducting petrological studies on the Kola Peninsula. He was the first to substantiate the existence of rich apatite ores in the Khibiny. In 1932 he sailed on the icebreaker Sibiriakov. Vlodavets was the organizer and the first director of the Kamchatka Volcanological Station (1935). He studied a group of active and extinct volcanoes. Of theoretical significance are his works dealing with the problem of ignimbrites. He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and various medals.
