Vlonë

a city in southwest Albania on the shores of the Vlonë Gulf of the Adriatic Sea. Population, 50,400 (1967). Vlonë is a transport center and the country’s second-largest port in volume of freight. Petroleum and petroleum products, bitumen, and soda are exported through Vlonë. Fish are processed, as well as subtropical crops, including olive oil, tobacco products, and canned goods. The city has a cement and a chemical industry (production of soda from sea salt). There is a large natural bitumen deposit near Vlonë in Selenicë.
