Al’tshuler, Semen Aleksandrovich
Born Sept. 11 (24), 1911, in Vitebsk. Soviet physicist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1976). Member of the CPSU since 1939.
Al’tshuler graduated from the University of Kazan in 1932. He has been a member of the university’s staff since 1935 and was named a professor there in 1956.
Al’tshuler’s principal works have dealt with the study of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) as well as with the theoretical basis and development of acoustic paramagnetic resonance. In 1948, working with B. M. Kozyrev and S. G. Salikhov, he discovered the effect of nuclear spin on EPR. Al’tshuler has been awarded five orders and various medals.
