Tuyug

a type of lyric poetry in classical Turkic literatures. It developed from ancient Turkic folk lyrics and was later influenced by Arabic and Persian quantitative versification.

The tuyug is a quatrain written in an aruz meter, with the rhyme scheme aaba, occasionally abcb, and in rare cases aaaa. There is sometimes a play on words (tecnis) in the rhyme. The earliest surviving tuyugs were written by G. A. Burhanettin (14th century). The tuyug was first distinguished as a genre by Navoi, who formulated its basic characteristics in his treatise on versification The Balance of Meters (late 15th century). The tuyug as a Turkic poetic form was also described by Baber in his Treatise on Aruz (early 16th century). Among contemporary Turkic peoples the genre is known as baiati (Azerbaijani), liale (Turkmen), and mani (Turkish).
