El’ger, Semen Vasil’evich

 

Born Apr. 19 (May 1), 1894, in the village of Bol’shie Abakasy, in what is now Ibresi Raion, Chuvash ASSR; died Sept. 6, 1966, in Cheboksary. Soviet Chuvash writer. Member of the CPSU from 1930. People’s Poet of the Chuvash ASSR (1940).

El’ger’s first published works appeared in 1921. His works include the verse collection The Epoch (1928); the historical narrative poem Under the Yoke (1931; Russian translation, 1960); the novels of revolutionary history At Dawn (1940; Russian translation, 1958) and Through Fire and Storm (1949); and the narrative poem The Year 1918 (1953).

El’ger was awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and several medals. His works have been translated into languages of the peoples of the USSR.
