Roskilde Peace of 1658

a treaty concluded between Denmark and Sweden on Feb. 26, 1658, in the city of Roskilde, ending the war that Denmark had started against Sweden in May 1657 in order to change the terms of the Brömsebro Peace of 1645. Denmark lost the war and in the ensuing Peace of Roskilde ceded to Sweden Skåne, Halland, Blekinge, Bohuslän, the county of Trondheim, and the island of Bornholm. Denmark pledged, among other things, to deny passage through its straits to all navies hostile to Sweden and to free Sweden from paying the duties—The Sound toll—levied on merchant ships passing through The Sound, or strait of Øresund. War broke out again between the two countries in 1658 and lasted until 1660, when it was ended in a way more favorable to Denmark through the Treaty of Copenhagen.
