Virilism
virilism[′vir·ə‚liz·əm] (medicine) gynandry (psychology) Masculinity. Manifestation of male behavioral patterns in the female. Virilism masculinization, appearance in women of male secondary sex characteristics. In virilism the voice becomes deeper, downy hair sprouts on the face and body, a mustache and beard grow, the external genitalia become enlarged, and the internal female genitalia become underdeveloped (and atrophy in adults). Menstruation does not occur, or if it does, it soon ceases. The musculature and skeleton acquire male features. Virilism arises from functional or organic changes in the endocrine system, especially in the adrenal cortex and anterior lobe of the pituitary gland. Virilism may also be caused by brain tumors, true or false hermaphroditism, preg-nancy, and the climacteric. Treatment is aimed at removing the main causes. REFERENCESShereshevskii, N. A., and E. A.
