Rasputin

(pop culture)Long a staple of occult lore, Grigori Rasputin, the Mad Monk of Russian history, appears as a villain in Mike Mignola's Hellboy comics. In Mignola's version, Rasputin has real powers of immortality, and appears as a bald, imposing magician with powerful multi-dimensional sorcerous abilities. According to the tale in Hellboy: Seed of Destruction (1994), after escaping the ruins of the Revolution, Rasputin holed up for a while in Italy before teaming with the occult-obsessed Nazis for more mystical experimentation. Rasputin became involved in a Nazi plan called “Ragna Rok,” which would result in a demonic invasion of Earth. A trip to the North Sea in 1944 to summon a demon resulted in the birth of Hellboy, but an English mystic intercepted the summoning, and Hellboy ended up being raised by Professor Bruttenholm, who trained the young demon to become the world's greatest paranormal investigator. Forty years later, Rasputin returned, having awoken a demon from beyond named Sadu-Hem, and planned to use the pyrokinetic powers of Hellboy's teammate Liz Sherman to breach the walls of our dimension to unleash a horde of monsters upon Earth. In the final battle, Rasputin tried to use his role as Hellboy's creator to bring him to the dark side. “If you kill me you will never know who you are,” Rasputin taunted. Hellboy resisted temptation and fought to save Liz, sending Rasputin to parts unknown, doubtless to regroup for another assault on Earth. In the 2004 film Hellboy, Rasputin is the main villain, played by Karl Roden. Among the movie's merchandising tie-ins were Mezco's 8-inch Rasputin action figure (with a smaller baby Hellboy figure) and a Hellboy-Rasputin “Mtz-Itz” two-pack of mini-figures. Although the origin story in which he appears isn't the best Hellboy yarn, Rasputin's fabled reputation makes him fit right in to Mignola's spooky, supernatural world.
