On the northeastern border of NC, on Albemarle Sound; organized 1668 (prior to statehood) as a precinct of Albemarle County. Name Origin: For the Pasquotank River, which forms its eastern border; from the Indian word pask-etan-ki 'where the current [of the stream] divides or forks.'
