Established: 1905.
Location:Offshore from Saint Petersburg, Florida, and accessible only by boat.
Special Features:When first established, the refuge was a mangrove island with a freshwater lake. A 1920 hurricane destroyed it and it is now a barrier island which houses the largest royal and sandwich tern nesting colonies in Florida.
Habitats: 63 acres, including a 30-acre meandering barrier island.
Access: Closed to the public.
Wild life: Royal terns, sandwich terns, brown pelicans.
