Trieste, Gulf of

(Golfo di Trieste), a gulf in the northernmost Adriatic Sea, forming part of the Gulf of Venice. The gulf extends 40 km inland and is 35 km wide at its entrance, with a maximum depth of 22 m. The gulf’s tides are mixed and range from 0.8 to 1.0 m. The port of Trieste is located on the eastern shore.
