Queen of Assyria. Wife of King Samshi-adad V and mother of Adad-nirari III; regent during Adad-nirari’s minority (810–806 B.C). Semi-ramis waged wars, chiefly in Media. She was known under the name of Sammu-ramat in Assyria and was first mentioned in classical literature as Semiramis in a work by the Greek writer Ctesias (fifth-early fourth century B.C). Semiramis is thought to have commissioned the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
