A condition characterised by nausea, vomiting, bloating, flatulence, diarrhoea, and steatorrhoea linked to a relative increase in bacteria in GI content which over time may be result in malnutrition
Diagnosis Jejunum aspirate with > 105 bacteria/ml
Risk factors Proton pump inhibitors, anatomic defects—e.g., fistulas, diverticula, blind loops, resection of ileo-cecal valve
Management Antibiotics, given in short cycles to prevent resistance
