a genus of annual herbs of the goosefoot family. The flowers are small, plain, and diclinous; the plants are monoecious. There are seven species in Europe and Asia; five of these exist in the USSR. A. amaranthoides’ grows along roads and rubbish heaps. It chokes spring and winter crops in the forest steppe and southern part of the forest zone from the Pacific Ocean to the Urals. Quarantine measures have been taken in the USSR against its spread.
