Rothenstein, Sir William

(rō`thənstīn), 1872–1945, English painter and writer. He was well known for his portraits of famous people and for his pictures of Jewish subjects, including Jews Mourning in the Synagogue (Tate Gall., London). There is a self-portrait in the Metropolitan Museum. He worked as an artist in both World Wars. Rothenstein wrote biographical sketches that appear in English Portraits (1898) and Twenty-four Portraits (1920–23). His Men and Memories (2 vol., 1922–38) and Since Fifty (1940) are autobiographical.
