Thumb, Albert

 

Born May 18,1865, in Freiburg; died there Aug. 14, 1915. German linguist; authority on the Greek language.

Thumb became a privatdocent at the University of Freiburg in 1891, a professor at the University of Marburg in 1901, and a professor at the University of Strasbourg in 1909. His major field of study was the historical dialectology of Greek. He also did work, however, on the Koine, or common Greek, of the Hellenistic period and on modern demotic Greek. Thumb was the author of a handbook on Sanskrit.
