small round cell tumour

small round cell tumour (adult)

A generic term for a malignancy composed of small (< 14 µm in diameter) round cells.
Examples
Neuroblastoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, lymphoma, mesenchymal chondrosarcoma, poorly differentiated synovial sarcoma, Ewing sarcoma, small cell carcinoma of lung, Merkel cell carcinoma, melanoma. The term is by definition non-specific: ancillary studies, especially immunohistochemistry, are mandatory to identify specific tumour antigens.
