Triglidae
Triglidae[′trig·lə‚dē] (vertebrate zoology) The searobins, a family of perciform fishes in the suborder Cottoidei. Triglidae (searobins, gurnards), a family of marine fishes of the order Perciformes. The body, which is spindle-shaped and covered with scales or plates, measures approximately 90 cm in length. The fingerlike lower rays of the ventral fin enable the fish to crawl on the bottom and also serve as organs of sense and taste. In deep-sea members of the genus Peristedion the entire body is covered with bony plates. Some species are capable of gliding in the air a short distance. Members of the family are found in seas of the subtropical and temperate zones; in the USSR they are encountered in the Black Sea, the Baltic Sea, various seas of the Far East, and occasionally the Barents Sea. The eggs are pelagic. The fish feed on invertebrates and small fishes. They are fished commercially. The flesh is very tasty. REFERENCEZhizn’ zhivotnykh, vol. 4, part 1. Moscow, 1971.Triglidae
