islands in the southwestern part of the Laptev Sea near the exit of Khatanga Gulf, in the Yakut ASSR.
Bol’shoi Begichev Island is 61 km long and 57 km wide. Its approximate area is 1,800 sq km. Its surface is a gently sloping plain with rounded ridges covered by tundra vegetation. The maximum elevation is 201 m. Deer and polar fox are hunted. Bol’shoi Begichev Island is a walrus rookery.
Malyi Begichev Island is located 7 km west across Pioner Strait. The Begichev Islands were discovered by N. A. Begichev.
