VITAMBO

VITAMBO

The largest vertical HIV-transmission trial ever reported, which enrolled 14,000 mother-infant pairs in sub-Saharan Africa. The study initially asked if vitamin-A supplementation provided any benefit; it didn’t. It was subsequently shown that the infants whose mothers seroconverted after giving birth were nearly 3 times more likely to be HIV positive at 12 months than those whose mothers were seropositive while they were pregnant, a difference attributed to the high viral load during acute HIV.
