Voronin, Nikolai

Born Nov. 30 (Dec. 13), 1904, in Vladimir. Soviet archaeologist and student of architecture, doctor of historical sciences (1945).

Voronin studied at Leningrad University (1923-26). He conducted excavations in ancient Russian towns (among them, Vladimir, Grodno, Rostov, and Suzdal’) and at Bogoliubovo, near Vladimir, where he discovered and investigated a 12th-century palace complex. His chief works are Essays on the History of Russian Architecture of the 16th and 17th Centuries (published in 1934), Monuments of Vladimir-Suzdal Architecture of the llth-13th Centuries (published in 1945), History of the Culture of Ancient Rus’, vols. 1-2 (Voronin was one of several authors and editors; the book was published in 1948-51 and won the State Prize of the USSR in 1952) .Ancient Grodno (published in 1954), Vladimir, Bogoliubovo, Suzdal’, and lur’ev-Pol’skoi (published in 1958; 3rd ed., 1967), and Architecture of Northeastern Rus’ of the 12th-15th Centuries, vols. 1-2 (published in 1961-62; Lenin Prize, 1965). Voronin’s scholarly and public activities are closely associated with the work of promoting and preserving monuments of history and culture. He has been awarded two orders and several medals.
