Voronov, Gennadii

Born Aug. 18 (31), 1910, in the village of Rameshki, in present-day Kalinin Oblast. Soviet state and Party figure. Became a member of the CPSU in 1931. Born into the family of a village teacher.

Voronov began working in 1929 and was an electrician, a work-brigade leader, and a foreman at the construction of the Cherepovets Glass Plant and the Perm’ Superphosphate Plant. In 1936 he graduated from the electrical engineering division of the mining department of the S. M. Kirov Tomsk Industrial Institute and then studied at the Novosibirsk Institute of Marxism-Leninism. In 1937-38 he was chief of the culture and propaganda department of the Kirov Raion committee of the ACP (Bolshevik) of the city of Tomsk. In 1938-39 he was chief of the propaganda and agitation department and secretary of the Prokop’evsk city party committee. From 1939 to 1948 he was secretary and second secretary and from 1948 to 1955 first secretary of the Chita oblast party committee. From 1948 to 1950 he was simultaneously first secretary of the Chita city party committee. He served as deputy minister of agriculture of the USSR from 1955 to 1957. From 1957 to 1961 he was first secretary of the Orenburg oblast committee of the CPSU.

In January-October 1961 Voronov was vice chairman and from October 1961 until November 1962 first vice-chairman of the Bureau of the Central Committee of the CPSU for the RSFSR. From 1962 to 1971 he was chairman of the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR and in July 1971 became chairman of the Committee of the People’s Control of the USSR. He was a delegate to the Nineteenth through Twenty-fourth Party Congresses; beginning with the Nineteenth Congress (1952) he has been elected a member of the Central Committee of the CPSU. In January-October 1961 Voronov was a candidate member of the Presidium and from October 1961 until April 1966 a member of the Presidium of the Central Committee of the CPSU; in April 1966 he became a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the CPSU. He was a deputy to the third through the eighth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR.

Voronov has repeatedly headed Soviet Party-government delegations abroad; he has participated in negotiations between Party-government delegations of the socialist coun-tries. Voronov took part in the work of the International Conference of the Communist and Workers’ Parties that was held in Moscow in June 1969. He has been awarded two Orders of Lenin and medals.
