Rava Agreement of 1698

a verbal agreement between the Russian tsar Peter I and Augustus II, king of Poland and elector of Saxony, concerning joint actions against Sweden. The agreement, concluded on Aug. 10–14 at Rava-Russkaia, marked the beginning of a military and political alliance between Russia and Poland on the eve of the Northern War of 1700–21 and laid the foundation of an anti-Swedish coalition called the Northern Alliance. A treaty of alliance was subsequently signed in Moscow on Nov. 11 (21), 1699. By terms of this treaty, Augustus II agreed to fight the Swedes in Livland and Estland, and Peter I pledged to oppose the Swedes in Karelia and Izhora Land. At the end of hostilities each side was to receive the territories in which it had pledged to fight.
