Wafangkou

a station on the China-Changchun railroad, near which a battle was fought on June 1-2 (14-15), 1904, during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05. The capture of Chinchou on May 13 (26) by the Japanese compelled the Russian command to send General Shtakel’berg’s Siberian I Corps from the Yingkou-Gaiping area south to relieve Port Arthur, which had been cut off by the Japanese. Discovering a movement to rendezvous by the Japanese Second Army of General Oku, the Russian troops passed to the defense, and then, after a two-day battle with superior enemy forces and under the threat of having the right flank turned, retreated to the north. The battle revealed the extremely ineffective command of troops on the part of Shtakel’berg and other Russian generals.
