a city and administrative center of Sengilei Raion, Ul’ianovsk Oblast, RSFSR. A landing on the right bank of the Kuibyshev Reservoir, Sengilei is located 45 km southeast of the Krasnyi Guliai railroad station on the Ul’ianovsk-Syzran’ line and 72 km from Ul’ianovsk. It has a cement plant, vegetablecanning and flour-milling combines, and a butter factory. A pedagogical school and a museum of local lore are located in the city. Sengilei was founded in 1666 as the Sengileevskaia Sloboda (tax-exempt settlement); it became a city in 1943.
