patient’s unmet need

A term for one part (of two) of a formative exercise, which was developed by Richard Eve, a GP in Taunton, Somerset, as a means of improving patient care, wherein a GP identifies a patient’s unmet need (PUN) by asking him- or herself whether the patient’s needs were met. Once found, the GP should ask whether the PUN was due to a lack clinical knowledge, non-clinical knowledge, skill or attitude, and then address the area lacking.

PUN—After each consultation the GP would identify and log when a patient's need was not met.
DEN—By identifying the PUN one can define one’s educational need. This may be a clinical or non-clinical area.
